The message (or messages) of the story are more important than the plot in this book. In fact, the story plot was designed to amplify the message of the story.

May Bahar writes from the future about her life, especially one part that haunts her, a part that takes place in our present. She looks back at her life and considers it perfectly ordinary. She had her talents, but so does everyone. She had her ups and downs, but so does everyone. She had drama, and comedy, good ideas, bad ideas, things that worked out, and things that did not.

When she returned to her war-torn homeland, May found it so altered, she felt like a refugee again. In her attempt to make a place for herself, May goes to Café River. There, she engages in conversations with one-legged, handsome and witty barman Benjamin. May’s unique perspectives of the social issues regarding economics, feminism, politics, religion and such earn her respect and admiration. However, she lost her place in the world again, and it was not because it was discovered that her estranged father is one of the worst war criminals.
